Change

The hosted relay app (app.ovis.sh) now opens on a sign-in screen, and after sign-in shows a dashboard to manage your PCs.

  • Sign-in first. Signed out, the front page shows only the sign-in (GitHub, plus Apple when the account service offers it). Two quiet links stay: "Pair with a QR or code", and, only when this device already holds pairings, "Continue without an account (N PCs)". A pairing link still opens straight into pairing.
  • Dashboard. Signed in (or continuing without an account): a summary strip (Ready / Needs you / Offline, relays in use, what needs attention), a connection map, and a PC table with Open, Add, Join, Update or Details per PC and a filter. The account directory is read again when the page comes into view and every 60 s while it stays visible.
  • Connection map. This device, each relay in use and each PC. Only PCs the account directory saw lately get a moving wire ("Seen lately"); a PC paired without an account shows "Paired · status unknown"; offline PCs are dotted. The map reports account last-seen state, not live connections: the front page has no open sessions. Under 760 px it becomes a route list; reduced motion stops all movement; animations pause off-screen.
  • Add a PC. A step sheet keeps both existing join flows unchanged: a PC new in the account types the number it shows and is approved on that PC; any other PC asks through the account, shows this device's digits and is approved by another account member. Joining still navigates to the PC's page, which continues the sheet from a one-time marker scoped to that PC.
  • Phones. Sticky top bar, a bottom tab bar with 44 px targets, stacked summary and the table as rows.
  • Translations. New dashboard dictionary part with ja, ko and zh; keys shared across parts moved to the base dictionaries as src/lib/i18n.test.ts requires.
  • Docs. DESIGN.md, docs/account.md and docs/relay.md describe the sign-in-first front page; changelog fragment changelog.d/relay-dashboard.md.

The visual approach (hub-and-orbit map, flowing dashes on live wires, step bars) borrows technique, not code, from GOAT's Fleet view.

Validation

  • bun run check fast on the PR head: exit 0 at bf1b447 (workflow syntax, generated types and themes, typecheck, build, unit tests 12984 pass / 0 fail / 50 skip)
  • bun scripts/relay-shell-browser-qa.ts: exit 0 on repeated local runs, with a new dashboard section that drives, in a real browser with an in-memory account service and real PCs on the Bun relay: the sign-in-only first screen, local QR pairing, "Seen lately" after the PC joins the account, relay stopped, offline by the browser clock (row, summary, attention list and map agree on the visible text), adding a new PC by its typed number, joining through the account from a second device, sign-out, reduced motion, map animation frames, and the 390 px Tab order. Every capture is checked for horizontal overflow at 1440 and 390, dark and light.
  • In the CI runner image (herdr-ci-runner:local): bun scripts/relay-e2e-regression.ts exit 0 (relay media QA included) and bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts exit 0 (it covers AccountPcs.tsx, which Settings shares). This ran on 94f841a plus the QA script; the later commits change the dashboard's header count and phone layout only.
  • Unit tests for the new parts: RelayShell, RelayMap, AddPcSheet, src/lib/relay/dashboard, src/lib/relay/shell, src/lib/i18n (including a check that the ja/ko/zh "Ready" words never say "connected") and both conventions.test.ts.
  • Manual QA by hand in a fresh browser profile: every flow above at 1440 and 390, dark and light, in en and ko, and keyboard-only; two defects found there (the account count and the phone Tab order) are fixed in this PR.
  • Not run: bun run check full, Windows and macOS jobs, and relay-panel-regression (it has no entry point of its own; it runs inside ui-regression.ts in CI). Not checked in the browser: ja and zh layouts at 390, themes other than the default.

Follow-ups (not in this PR)

  • Already on main: after Open then Change PC, each row says "Connecting…" for up to about 40 s while the summary says Ready (the 60 s probe throttle in src/lib/relay/shell.tsx).
  • Already on main: the relay-stopped pairing step in scripts/relay-shell-browser-qa.ts (pairFrom, the connecting wait) can miss a screen that comes and goes at once; waiting for the confirm screen to detach instead would fix it.
  • Already on main: joinAccount's warning logs only the error's name, so an occasional "did not join the account yet TypeError" during QA could not be diagnosed.
  • The signed-in front page has no "Pair with a QR or code" link, so docs/relay.md's wording about pairing from the front page fits signed-out users only.

The signed-in and no-account front page is now a dashboard: summary strip, PC table with Open/Add/Join/Update/Details and a filter, and the directory refreshed when the page is visible. Adding a PC opens a step sheet that keeps both join modes (typed number on a new PC, comparison approved by an account member), continued on the PC's page after the join navigates. The connection map component (RelayMap) draws this device, each relay and the PCs, animating only PCs the account saw lately. Plan todos 4, 5 and 6.
Mounts the connection map on the dashboard and lays the dashboard out for phones: sticky top bar, a bottom tab bar with 44px targets, a stacked summary and the PC table as rows. Plan todos 13 and 7.
…n the sheet

Code review follow-ups: one directory read per refresh even when two triggers land together; the Add-a-PC sheet shows how a join failed, with the shell's failure titles and actions from one shared helper; one relay host helper; the dashboard's Add/Join choice is the one used; DESIGN.md and docs/account.md describe the dashboard and sheet.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features
    • Added a dashboard for account and local PC lists, with PC and relay summaries, a connection map, filtering, status details, and relevant PC actions.
    • Added guided flows to add a new PC or join an existing one, including number verification and approval steps.
    • The sign-in screen now offers QR/code pairing and access to locally paired PCs without an account.
    • Dashboard information refreshes when it becomes visible and periodically while visible.
    • On smaller screens, navigation moves to a bottom tab bar and the connection map becomes a route list.
    • Added dashboard and pairing translations in Japanese, Korean, and Simplified Chinese.
  • Documentation
    • Updated PC pairing and account sign-in instructions.

The hosted relay shell now provides sign-in, account and local dashboards, and Add-a-PC pairing flows. It adds directory refresh, relay connection maps, responsive layouts, translations, and browser QA coverage.

Changes: Hosted relay dashboard

Layer / File(s) Summary
Directory data and refresh
src/lib/relay/dashboard.ts, src/lib/relay/dashboard.test.ts, src/lib/relay/shell.tsx, src/lib/relay/shell.test.tsx
The relay library builds dashboard PC and relay data. The shell merges directory entries with local pairings and refreshes visible signed-in dashboard data on load, visibility changes, and a 60-second interval.
Shell navigation and dashboard integration
src/components/RelayShell.tsx, src/components/AccountPcs.tsx, src/components/RelayShell.test.tsx, src/components/RelayShell.css, src/lib/i18n/*, docs/account.md, docs/relay.md, DESIGN.md, changelog.d/relay-dashboard.md
The shell separates sign-in from saved-PC access and renders account or local views in the dashboard. The documentation, tests, and translations describe the changed entry points and dashboard actions.
Add-a-PC sheet and pairing continuation
src/components/AddPcSheet.tsx, src/components/AddPcSheet.css, src/components/AddPcSheet.test.tsx, src/components/RelayShell.tsx, src/lib/relay/shell.tsx, src/lib/relay/shellState.ts, src/components/relayFailureText.ts
The sheet supports adding a PC, joining an existing PC, and QR/code pairing. The shell carries matching join state across navigation and uses shared failure text.
Dashboard and connection map presentation
src/components/RelayDashboard.tsx, src/components/RelayDashboard.css, src/components/RelayMap.tsx, src/components/RelayMap.css, src/components/RelayMap.test.tsx, src/lib/i18n/dashboard.*.ts, src/lib/i18n.test.ts
The dashboard adds summaries, filters, PC actions, and responsive navigation. The connection map adds relay and PC placement, connection states, animated traffic, and a small-screen route list.
Browser flow validation
scripts/relay-shell-browser-qa.ts
The QA script exercises sign-in, pairing, dashboard, offline, responsive, keyboard, reduced-motion, and map-animation behavior against a fake account service and relay-connected test PCs.

Full details: Title check

Explanation

The title "feat(relay): open the hosted relay app on sign-in and a PC dashboard" matches the main change: the hosted relay app now opens on a sign-in screen and adds a PC dashboard. The changeset also adds the Add-a-PC sheet, connection map, translations, and docs, which the title does not name, but it is not off-topic and captures the primary change.

Full details: Description check

Explanation

The description follows the template's two sections, Change and Validation. The Change section explains the problem and resulting behavior: sign-in-first front page, dashboard, connection map, Add-a-PC sheet, phone layout, translations, and docs. The Validation section lists the commands run with results (bun run check fast, the browser QA script, the e2e and settings regressions, and manual QA), along with the checks not run. It does not link a maintainer-agreed issue, which the template asks for on features, and it does not state whether HTTP/WS contract-test coverage applies. The section on remaining follow-ups is extra, but the description is complete overall.

Test refresh completion after sign-out.

- Around line 382-383: When account.session() returns undefined in the refresh

stale account rows and controls; preserve the existing accountView !== current
guard so obsolete refreshes do not change the view.
- Around line 393-395: Update the refresh flow around the failed-read branch
that assigns accountView so retained PC states are recalculated from their
last-sighting times even when directory reads fail. After 15 minutes without a
sighting, stop presenting a PC as Ready or “Seen lately” and remove its
live-wire indication, while preserving retained state for PCs still within that
window.
- Around line 384-389: The refresh flow updates the PC list without retrying
queued add approvals. After `account.listPcs()` and `pcsOf()` complete
successfully, invoke the existing queued-add retry mechanism, while preserving
the stale-view checks and ensuring failed refreshes do not trigger retries.

A directory last-seen time stays stale until the PC's next mailbox pull, so a
PC that just came back looked offline and lost the Join action main offered.
…t a gone session

A read on coming into view no longer starts while the first read is out, so its
older answer cannot land over a newer one. A read that finds the sign-in gone
(another tab signed out) shows the signed-out page instead of the old rows, and
each read again resends this device's queued adds as the first read does. The

A PC this device paired by QR before signing in is listed but not linked, so
leaving the account does not reach it: its dashboard row now says so, as main's
list did. The first directory read redraws the front page only when it is
still up, so a code typed meanwhile stays.

Finishing pass (maintainer edits on this branch)

Merged origin/main (7f6546b, no force push). Conflicts were only in the ja/ko/zh dictionaries (src/lib/i18n.{ja,ko,zh}.ts, src/lib/i18n/relay.{ja,ko,zh}.ts), resolved keeping both sides: main's new base keys (Remove PC, Added, Sign in to Ovis moved to the base dictionary) plus this PR's keys, and main's reworded "PC shows its ID at the top of Settings → Devices and PCs" strings with its four new relay keys.

Fixes from the reviews (each with a test that fails on the code before it):

  • 207ac08: an offline dashboard row that is not paired but has a join route keeps Join (a stale last-seen time no longer removes the action main offered). Codex MEDIUM.
  • e5e5d26: no read again starts while the first directory read is out (an older answer could land over a newer one; Codex MEDIUM + CodeRabbit); a read that finds the session gone shows the signed-out page; each read again resends queued account adds; the dashboard QA's account PCs get their own herdr config.
  • f0ce8e9: a PC paired by QR before the sign-in (listed, not linked) says "paired by QR · not in the account yet" / "Ready · not in the account yet" again, as main's list did, since leaving the account does not reach that pairing (omo MEDIUM, reproduced); the first read no longer replaces a code entry the user opened while it was loading (omo LOW, reproduced).

Not fixed in this round (not reproduced, follow-up candidates):

  • Codex MEDIUM: the table's state cell can show this device's own probe result (Offline) while the summary/map use the directory state (Ready) for a paired PC whose relay just dropped.
  • Codex MEDIUM / CodeRabbit: when the account admission POST fails and the shell falls back to PC-only pairing, the sheet still says the number appears on another account device.
  • omo LOW: a PC added to the account under 10 minutes ago offers only Add (typed number), not also the plain Join.
  • CodeRabbit: a failed read again keeps the last states without re-deriving them from last-seen times.

Validation at f0ce8e9

  • bun run check fast: exit 0 (unit 13052 pass, 0 fail, 50 skip).
  • In the CI runner image (herdr-ci-runner:local, standalone clone): bun run build && bun run build:shell && bun scripts/relay-e2e-regression.ts exit 0 (relay media QA and the shell QA's dashboard section, 38 dashboard checks) and bun scripts/settings-pages-demo-regression.ts exit 0.
  • Reviews: Codex (adversarial, read-only) found no HIGH; omo review at 207ac08 found no HIGH (BLOCK on the MEDIUM fixed in f0ce8e9); re-review at the new head requested.
  • Not run: bun run check full, Windows and macOS jobs.

Test sign-out on the mounted component.

Open the QR route, update the same RelayShell to signed-out props, and assert that pairing content is absent. The separate static renders reset addingPc, so they can miss pairing content left on the sign-in page when a pending directory read ends the session.

- Around line 126-128: Update the button-selection logic in RelayDashboard so a
fresh PC entry does not offer only Add when its PC-only pairing window is
closed. Provide access to the account-member Join flow in that state while
preserving Add when appropriate; use the existing pairing-window state to
determine which action is available.
- Around line 262-264: Update the row rendering in RelayDashboard so a failed
probe does not replace the PC’s directory state with Offline; keep the directory
state visible and show the probe result separately with a clear label. Preserve
the existing Ready filter, summary, and probe-status behavior.

Review comments at @src/lib/relay/shell.test.tsx:
- Around line 65-66: Update the afterEach cleanup to call visible with the
hidden state before jest.useRealTimers(), ensuring the page is hidden before
timers and globals are restored.

Review comments at @src/lib/relay/shell.tsx:
- Around line 397-403: Update the SignedOutError handling in the account
directory-read flow to reset the dashboard’s QR navigation when the session
ends. Ensure the signed-out view displays sign-in content alone, while
preserving the existing non-sign-out error handling and dashboard navigation
behavior.
- Line 403: Update showFront and its refresh call so a pending directory read
cannot replace the connected app: after awaiting store.list(), skip showing the
front view when an app is active for this refresh path. Preserve existing
showFront behavior for other callers.
- Line 403: In the refresh flow around `dashboardUp()` and `showFront()`,
recheck the current screen immediately before publishing signed-in refreshes,
including the initial `store.list()` read. If the user has opened code entry
while the read was pending, preserve that screen and its typed input rather than
rendering `showFront()`.
- Around line 404-406: Bound the directory read in the refresh flow identified
by the `read` promise and `refreshing` guard so a stalled request reports an
error and releases the guard for a later retry. Ensure a result arriving after
the bound has expired cannot update the displayed rows, and preserve the
existing cleanup behavior for the active read.
- Line 400: In the failed directory-refresh path that updates accountView,
recalculate each paired PC’s state from its retained last-seen timestamp so the
summary and map reflect whether it has crossed the offline threshold. Preserve
the timestamps and existing state rules; do not leave stale Ready or “Seen
lately” indicators when refresh requests fail.
- Line 354: Guard the initial `pcsOf(session, directory)` request so it
publishes results or handles errors only if `accountView` has not changed since
the request began. Prevent stale success or error paths from restoring the
signed-in dashboard or account rows after sign-out.
- Around line 384-389: Bind the refresh flow around `account.session()` to the
account represented by that session, so `listPcs()` and `pcsOf()` use the same
account even if another tab switches accounts mid-refresh. Update the stored
provider when the session’s provider changes, and retain the existing
`accountView !== current` guards to prevent stale refresh results from updating
the dashboard.

Nitpick comments:
Review comments at @src/components/RelayShell.test.tsx:
- Around line 72-75: Update the sign-out test to mount one RelayShell, open its
QR route, then update that same component with signed-out props instead of using
separate static render calls. Assert that pairing content is absent after the
update, including when a directory read is pending, so the test covers state
retained from the sign-in page.

Review status at f0ce8e9

  • omo review: CLEAR at f0ce8e9.
  • Codex (adversarial): no HIGH; its MEDIUMs are fixed or listed below.
  • CodeRabbit reviewed f0ce8e9 (12 comments, 2 Major); none reproduced. All threads are answered and resolved; this PR's one extra fix round is spent, so the rest are follow-ups. None of them is reproduced, so they live here rather than as issues.

Follow-ups (unreproduced):

  1. Dashboard state cell: this device's probe result (Offline) can replace the directory state (Ready) for a paired PC whose relay just dropped, while the summary and map keep the directory state (Codex MEDIUM, CodeRabbit).
  2. Add-a-PC sheet: when the account admission POST fails and the shell falls back to PC-only pairing, the sheet still says the number shows on another account device (Codex MEDIUM, CodeRabbit).
  3. A PC added to the account under 10 minutes ago offers only Add (typed number), not also Join (omo LOW, CodeRabbit).
  4. Read again: a sign-out answer redraws the front page only when no PC app is open (also require app === null on the signed-out path) (CodeRabbit Major).
  5. Another tab signing in to a different account: a read again in this tab can show the other account's PCs under this tab's provider label (CodeRabbit).
  6. A failed read again keeps the last states instead of re-deriving them from last-seen times; a stalled read keeps the refresh guard until the request ends (CodeRabbit).
  7. Signed-out page and the dashboard's QR navigation could both render after a sign-out during Add a PC (CodeRabbit).
  8. Leaving the account: warn at confirmation that QR pairings from before the sign-in stay active until revoked on those PCs (CodeRabbit).
  9. QA hardening: the 390 px Add-sheet capture's fixture and the account PCs' teardown order (CodeRabbit; the QA passed three times in the CI runner image).
